Exterior Steps Code
Here are three reference numbers for the codes pertaining to rise run and nosing in a straight run of stairs.
Exterior steps code. Steps and stairs must now comply with the Building Code of Australia - which has been given the status of building regulation by Australias states and territories. While the finer details will ultimately be influenced by your local governments building regulations the International Building Code the International Residential Code and the standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 maintain that exterior stairs that are a required point of egress in other words stairs that must be crossed on your way in and out of the building must have handrails. Platform railings must be 34 to 38 inches vertical from the top of the step to the top of the railing.
Section R3115 states that exterior landings decks balconies stairs and similar facilities shall be positively. The stripe shall be a minimum of 2 inches 508 mm wide to a maximum of 4 inches 1016 mm wide placed parallel to and not more than 1 inch 254 mm from the nose of the step or upper approach. The stair treads should be at least 36 inches wide.
Ladder rungs must be able to carry a minimum of 300 pounds in an area of no more than four. Building Code Trainer 2018. Outdoor stair railing code Outdoor stair guardrails must comply with all the general requirements of IRC Section R3121 Guards.
Same height for all risers. We here at Goodmanson Construction. If youre planning to put guardrails on each side then the width must be at least 27 below the guardrail top height.
The height of your front entry step called Risers according to code can be no higher than 7 34 inches. Outdoor stair nosing code. Under the handrail the width must be at least 315 if theres one guardrail.
Outdoor stair landing code. Riser Height and Tread Depth IBC 10115 The step height also known as the riser height must be no less than 4 inches and no greater than 7 inches. The NCC is updated and amended regularly.
